“Chophouse” 2011 (YouTube)

It’s incredible how fast things can spread on the Internet. An anonymous tip in my e-mail inbox last Wednesday contained little more than a YouTube link. Of course I was hesitant to click on it, as YouTube is mostly full of zany, brainless videos that serve little purpose other than to waste time. But it was labeled as a horror movie, and curiosity got the better of me. I gave in and clicked.

Little did I know that what I was about to watch was one of the scariest things I had ever laid eyes upon. Director Matt Kaufman takes us through the twists and turns of Noah and Leo Brown’s spine-chilling screenplay at a breakneck pace. With a running time just shy of four minutes, the film wastes no time getting to the goods.

Brothers James and John Helminth (Noah and Leo, respectively) are enjoying a leisurely night in, reading Nietzsche and playing piano, when a stranger knocks. Jerry Van Pire (Kaufman) seems nice enough, and is just looking for a place to stay. But this is just the beginning of a very long night for the Helminth brothers.

I won’t go into much more detail, I’ll leave that to the film. I will say this, however: Chophouse is chock full of suspense and terror, with plenty of red stuff to spare. I didn’t know what to expect going in, but it sure surprised me. Horror fans will not be disappointed.

note: This review is intended for the stars of this film. Reviews of feature length films will resume after this. Though this is an amateur work without wide release, you should still check it out. These kids are adorable, and good actors to boot!

Re-vamped and ready to go.
